Julia Nguyen’s (‘22) passion for filmmaking, movies, and documentaries led her to create the Global Film Club.
The Global Film Club explores social issues from around the world through watching film documentaries and funding humanitarian projects. The club focuses on issues such as equality, representation, human rights, ethical living, homelessness, and international education. Nguyen seeks to inspire others to discover new cultures, languages, and ideas to create a community of motivated, empathic students.
Currently, the club’s main focus is video research. This includes watching short to full length documentaries from sources like National Geographic, Ted-ED, and Netflix. After determining the message and purpose of each documentary, they discuss and research the global issue addressed in the documentary.
By watching documentaries and discussing these issues, club members gain a stronger understanding of the community and its problems. Then, they plan ways to support the cause, like through fundraisers.
Nguyen believes that it is essential to gain new perspectives, especially when living in a multiethnic community. This also allows club members to experience new cultures and stories.
“Our world is so diverse, so it’s important to embrace this and spark our curiosity to learn about others,” Nguyen says.
Due to COVID-19, Global Film will meet virtually on Zoom in Trimester 2. To join this club, contact globalfilmclub@gmail.com.
