City Lights: Homecoming 2023 Recap

On October 7th, ASB, Associated Student Body, our student government organization that handles events including Homecoming, hosted our annual Homecoming Dance at the California Center for the Performing Arts Escondido. The theme was “City of Lights.” Attendance was sold out with approximately 1500 students.

This year’s Homecoming featured standards like a mosh pit and silent disco, and new features like Poker tables, which were crowd-pleasers at Prom last year but have yet to be seen at a Homecoming, and tables of refreshments complete with chocolate fountains, which were a hit among students.

Jack Bruvold, a senior, has been to all three Homecomings that have hosted in his time at the school. Bruvold’s favorite feature of Homecoming this year was the Poker tables, but compared the moshing unfavorably to previous years, explaining “The seniors last year were able to run the mosh better than the juniors now or the seniors, so it just became less fun.”

Brianna Busse, also a senior, expressed a similar sentiment. Busse ranked the three Homecomings she has been to with junior year (at the Air and Space Museum) coming in first, then sophomore year (at Del Norte), and this year’s at the bottom, explaining “I feel like the venue was kind of small and separated. There were a lot of different rooms. It wasn’t very centralized.”

Naqiya Baxamusa and Eurietta Hasim, sophomores, who stayed for the entire duration, said that they really enjoyed the chocolate strawberries, but enjoyed last year’s venue, the Air and Space Museum at Balboa Park, more than the Center for Performing Arts.

For freshman Audrey Le, this year’s Homecoming was her first. Le’s favorite part of Homecoming was the chocolate fountains, but she overall did not enjoy her experience that much. “I tried to go into the mosh pit with my friends and there were sweaty people throwing gang signs… so I shielded my arms and ran away.” When asked what she would like changed about future Homecomings, Le replied “Better DJ…more food…a little of everything.”
