In virtual learning, students have tried to facilitate ways to connect with others and the school.
Sophomore class president Meghna Mohan has encouraged participation in school activities through the Associated Student Body. Being in ASB has allowed her to facilitate connections with peers and faculty, although it’s different this year.
Around this time last school year, ASB had already hosted Homecoming and planned multiple spirit days, and had already begun to prepare for Prom. However, with virtual learning, opportunities for these types of school activities have been very limited.
Gina Kim (‘23) is another student who has found ways to interact with the school. During the 2020-2021 school year, Kim joined two clubs, DECA and Girl Up, which allow her to interact with and meet people she would not have met otherwise. Clubs have been one of the few groups still in constant communication during virtual learning.
For two years, Kim has also been in the student council, a club dedicated to planning school events without the time commitment of ASB. Both online and in-person, the club typically helps the ASB presidents plan events for their class and the school. They also help promote school events by advertising on social media.
As sophomore class vice president, Emma Hong joined Meghna Mohan in creating the “We the Class of 2023” podcast, in which they discuss popular high school topics with occasional guest students. Currently, they have two episodes available to listen to that discuss mental health and the use of social media for good. The podcast aims to give students a chance to connect with their peers and school by hearing what others have to say.
Ultimately, despite all the hardships that virtual learning has brought along, students around campus have found ways to stay connected whether it be through podcasts or online ASB elections.
